IFP COUNCILLOR ATTACKED AT MAPHUMULO

February 1, 2006

IFP Deputy National Chairperson, Mr Velaphi Ndlovu, today responded to reports that sitting councillor and Speaker of KwaMaphumulo Municipality and candidate in Ward 3, Mr BZ Ndlovu, was attacked at his home in the early hours of today, 1 February 2006.

Mr Ndlovu said, "According to reports received Mr Ndlovu's house was attacked at approximately 3am this morning (1 February 2006). Mr Ndlovu managed to escape through a window of the house, but his wife and daughter were assaulted by these attackers who damaged furniture in the house, broke windows and stole R1 000 in church collections, which Mr Ndlovu kept for safekeeping as treasurer of the local church. It is also reported that these attackers told Mr Ndlovu and his family that they are from an opposition party and that if he was to be killed it would be to their benefit."

"We have been informed that two men were arrested by the police in connection with the attack and it appears that they are neighbours of Mr Ndlovu," Mr Ndlovu continued.

"We wish to congratulate the police on the speedy arrests and are awaiting the outcome. This attack and the statements made by the attackers concern us and we urge the police and our political opponents not to use violence or intimidation to try to secure electoral victory by default. We all aspire to electoral victory, but getting it by hook or crook is not a victory it is only an indication that those who attempt this do not respect voters," Mr Ndlovu concluded.
