IFP DEMANDS ARRESTS TO END VIOLENCE IN WESTERN CAPE TRANSPORT DISPUTE

CAPE TOWN :  1JUNE, 2000

ANC warned against using the race card to make political capital out of dispute.

Following another attack on a Golden Arrow bus driver in Khayelitsha this morning, Mr Velaphi Ndlovu MP, IFP Spokesperson on Safety and Security, has demanded that the police start making arrests in order to quell the violence.

Mr Ndlovu said:

"Unless the police start making arrests immediately, the violence and killing will go on. I urge the Western Cape MEC for Safety and Security, Mark Wiley, to take action now, in conjunction with the SAPS to secure the arrests of those guilty of violence and to restore law and order to the area. We simply cannot allow this situation to go on for another day longer.

"I also warn the ANC not to use the race card in dealing with this dispute. What is important is that the correct measures are put in place to end the violence and resolve the dispute. Throwing insults at political opponents will do nothing to end the killing or to assist the people of the region. It will simply heighten tensions and further divide the people of South Africa"

"The restoration of law and order must be the first priority of the authorities but provincial and national Ministers must also sit down with the parties to this dispute and try to remove the underlying causes which have led to this tragic violence."
