ESTABLISHMENT OF DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL INVESTIGATIONS

CAPE TOWN : SEPTEMBER 1, 1999

IFP Welcomes Move But Warns Post Must Be Protected From Political Interference IFP Safety and Security Spokesperson, Mr Velaphi Ndlovu MP, has welcomed the establishment of the post of Director of Special Investigations but has cautioned that this powerful office must be protected from political interference.

Mr Ndlovu said:

"The establishment of the Office of Director of Special Investigation is in line with the IFP philosophy that the category of serious crimes should be separated from petty crime. The IFP recognises and agrees with the establishment of this office although we know that results will not come as quickly as we would all wish."

"Given the powers of this new office, it will be vital that it remains free from political interference and is not used as a tool for politically motivated harassment. Our democracy is very new and fragile, if we are to cherish and nurture it, we must be on our guard at all times against the misuse of organs of the state for party political purposes."

"However the IFP believes that if used properly, this new Office will be of great assistance in tackling serious crime. The IFP therefore supports the President in establishing the DSI and urges all security forces in the country to co-operate with the DSI and give it all the assistance that is required."
