Nuclear Ship's Arrival Poses Threat to SA

30th September 2008

The IFP is seeking an explanation from government and the SA Navy why the US nuclear vessel, the USS Theodore Roosevelt, will be allowed to dock in Cape Town later today.

The USS Theodore Roosevelt is one of the world's most powerful nuclear vessels and was granted a license to enter South African shores despite strong objections from environmental groups.

"We are opposed to the vessel docking in South African waters as it poses a danger to our environment," commented IFP Minerals and Energy spokesperson Eric Lucas.

"Although we acknowledge that the ship's visit forms part of a diplomatic mission to our country, we don't believe that there was proper consultation with all stakeholders.

"Furthermore, as far as we could establish, there are currently no special safety measures in place at Table Bay Harbour and the IFP finds this totally irresponsible and unacceptable. If anything goes wrong it is the people in the Western Cape who are at risk," concluded Mr Lucas.
