Water Wastage Needs Urgent Attention

MEDIA STATEMENT ISSUED BY:
MR MABALANA SIBUYANA MP
IFP SPOKESPERSON ON WATER AFFAIRS

December 1, 2006

The Inkatha Freedom Party's Spokesperson on Water Affairs, Mr Mabalana Sibuyana MP, said that recent reports indicating a staggering 38-53% loss in water between our dams and taps in Cape Town are alarming and needs urgent attention.

"We live in an arid county and climate change predications for the Western Cape indicate drier and hotter summers for the next 25 years. We must therefore increase our efforts to save water and not become complacent just because we've had a few good rainfalls recently," said Mr Sibuyana.

"The IFP believes that this water wastage will have serious consequences for the Western Cape and we appeal to the Western Cape Government to do all in its power to rectify this problem immediately. It is unacceptable not to know why or how the water is being lost. We need urgent intervention before water shortages reaches critical levels in the Western Cape again.

In conclusion Mr Sibuyana said: "We want to urge the public to check their taps and pipes so as to make sure that they are in good working order.  Furthermore, the IFP would yet again like to appeal to South Africans - please be water wise!"
