DEVOLVEMENT OF POWER

June 1, 2006

The IFP's spokesperson for Safety & Security, Mr. Velaphi Ndlovu, today applauded the Department for listening to the IFP regarding the devolving of powers of the police to the Station Commissioners.

Mr. Ndlovu said:
"The debate regarding this matter of devolution of power has been long overdue and the whole Safety & Security Portfolio Committee has agreed with me. Members of the police must not be afraid because we are not implementing resolution seven but devolvement of powers. All specialized personnel will be accommodated at local level where they are needed."

Further Mr. Ndlovu added that he welcomed the increased employment rate of police and detective services. "It is important for the Department to reduce the burden of detectives carrying 150 dockets each. This stress is often a direct cause of policemen and women committing suicide."

In conclusion Mr. Ndlovu said: "The Department should look into employing more Psychologists to the service, as well as improve the environment of the police stations so that victims could feel more secure when reporting their ordeals."
