IFP National Chairperson Zanele
kaMagwaza-Msibi has extended her heartfelt condolences to all
victims of recent veld fires in the province and countrywide.
The fires burnt down households leaving thousands homeless and
hectares of grazing land destroyed. At least 21 people are
reported to have lost their lives.
kaMagwaza-Msibi said "This is one of the
biggest disasters to hit our province. We have heard reports
that most districts in this province were affected including Umkhanyakude, uThungulu, Zululand and Umzinyathi."
"Their disaster
management teams have been working day and night in the affected
areas. Food parcels, tents and blankets have also been
distributed to the affected people', she said.
The IFP chairperson has also expressed her
shock that KwaZulu Natal Premier Sibusiso Ndebele has allegedly
declared only INkandla a disaster area, neglecting other areas
that were equally damaged. "I am disappointed by the Premier's
reaction following his visit to some of the affected areas
yesterday. Public awareness on disaster related issues needs to
be conducted to establish clear criteria for a disaster area. I
call on the Premier to attend to this disaster without political
discrimination so that all those affected will benefit", she
said.
