The IFP in Gauteng said today that while South
Africans have been more vocal in their condemnation of violence
against women and children during the Sixteen Days of Activism
Against Gender Violence campaign, which runs internationally
between 25 November and 10 December each year, the truth is that
very little progress has been made in halting this violence.
This comes following reports that a seven year
old girl and three month old baby were raped in Protea Glen and
Katlehong respectively.
"We are extremely shocked by these incidents.
The struggle for gender equality and childrens' rights in South
Africa is a battle that is far from over. We must intensify our
efforts and turn the tide against one of the most heinous crimes
in the world - women and child abuse," said Petros Sithole, IFP
Gauteng Provincial
Chairperson.
He added: "The IFP appeals to government to
look at tougher sentences for abusers of women and children. We
are of the opinion that nothing less than life sentences are
adequate."
