Constitutional Court Judgementre Prisoners Vote

Pretoria: 3 March 2004

The judgment of the Constitutional Court declaring the unconstitutionality of the disenfranchisement of prisoners vindicates the concerns of constitutionality which are expressed in Cabinet and Parliament over the
legislation which I was requested to carry as the competent Minister.

I did not directly participate in the litigation which was handled by the Presidency and my Director-General. Throughout my service as the Minister of Home Affairs I tried to act with professionalism and integrity in the
interests of the State and the rule of law .

I regret that often when I express concerns or take positions in the interests of the State, I am looked upon with suspicion and distrust.
