IFP CONDEMNS LIVESTOCK POISONING IN VRYHEID

CAPE TOWN : WEDNESDAY 3 MAY, 2000

IFP Member of Parliament, Albert Mncwango has strongly condemned the action of a Vryheid farmer who poisoned the livestock of his farm worker. Mr Mncwango has called upon other farmers in the Vryheid area to join him in condemning the farmer concerned. He is also requesting an urgent meeting with the Vryheid Farmers' Association to try and reduce rising tensions in the area.

Mr Mncwango said:

"I call on all farmers to unequivocally condemn the poisoning of this farm worker's livestock. The commercial farmers of the area must make absolutely clear that they are totally opposed to this sort of behaviour, otherwise it will not be possible to reduce the antagonism that is growing between local communities."

"I also urge the KwaZulu Natal Agricultural Union to take a strong stand on this matter and to make clear to all its members that this sort of incident is extremely damaging to the cause of commercial farmers."

"The Government must also take note that the slow progress of land reform is contributing to a deterioration in the relationship between farm workers and farm owners. We must make sure that we act quickly on land reform to prevent tensions in our farming areas from getting out of hand."
