IFP TO MONITOR LIFT MAINTENANCE IN DURBAN
May 3, 2006
The IFP pledges to monitor the work of the
Infrastructure Committee at eThekwini Metro council and inform
the public of any progress.
This is in response to residents' reports about the state of
lifts in residential apartment buildings all around Durban.
Many lifts reportedly break down regularly with people stuck in
them for long periods of time. There have also been instances of
lift cables snapping and lifts plunging several floors with
people inside.
"The IFP in eThekwini council will see to it that the existing
laws concerning lifts in residential apartment buildings are
enforced," said Councillor Thembi Nzuza who leads the IFP in
that council.
"We will urge the officials in the Infrastructure Committee to
ensure that lifts' log books are regularly inspected and lifts
are accordingly maintained," said Councillor Nzuza.
The IFP also exhorts the council to take strict measures against
the offenders. "We will demand action against the owners who
fail to report faults and the officials who neglect regular
maintenance," said Councillor Nzuza.
