Safer Environments Needed for Our Kids

IFP PRESS STATEMENT BY:
MR VELAPHI NDLOVU MP:
IFP SPOKESPERSON ON SAFETY AND SECURITY

3 July 2007

IFP SHOCKED BY MIKAYLA AND SONJA'S DEATHS

The Inkatha Freedom Party's Spokesperson for Safety and Security, Mr Velaphi Ndlovu MP, today once again voiced his concern about the high levels of crime in South Africa, especially abuse and crime against children.

"Only a short while ago I decried the deaths of seven-year-old Sheldean Human of Pretoria and eleven-year-old Annestacia Wiese of Mitchells Plain.

Now, two more young South Africans - six-year old Mikayla Rossouw from Swellendam and two-year-old Sonja Brown from Rawnsonville - have had their lives taken from them by callous murderers.

"We need to ask serious questions about the state of our nation. We are clearly living in a society that is in desperate need of moral regeneration.

A transforming society, like ours, need not be an uncivilised society. If South Africa wants to turn the tide against crime, we must urgently bring back a sense of respect in our schools, communities, townships and cities.

"What is clear from the crime stats released today is that not enough is being done by government and police to create safer environments for our children. The murder rate is up by 2.4 percent and that is definitely not a good sign.

"Therefore, the Inkatha Freedom Party wants to challenge all communities to take the lead in making South Africa a safer place. We want to challenge parents, neighbourhood watch groups and police forums to take charge, so that we can stop the murder rate in South Africa from increasing even more.

Drastic measures are now needed," concluded Mr Ndlovu MP.
