IFP CONDEMNS ESCOURT KILLINGS

April 4, 2006

IFP Deputy National Chairperson, Mr Velaphi Ndlovu, today responded to media reports after the murder of ANC leader, Mr Ephraim Goli Mkhize, and eight-year-old Nathi Dladla in Escourt on Sunday.

Mr Ndlovu said, "We are shocked by the news of the death of Mr Mkhize and the young Nathi Dladla on Sunday night. We are deeply saddened by this news and sincerely extend our condolences to the families affected."

"We are also deeply concerned about statements made to the media by Mr Phiwokwakhe Sokhela regarding the attack without providing concrete proof and the media not providing the IFP with an opportunity to investigate and respond, thus presenting these comments to the public as a fait accompli."

"We implore that the SAPS investigate this attack and bring the culprits to book. If indeed a political opponent is involved, we as a Party commit ourselves to assist in whatever means possible to bring the perpetrators to book and to ensure continued stability in the area."

"Using violence as a means to secure political dominance is political suicide as it alienates the electorate whose votes a party wants to attract. We condemn any form of intimidation and violence as a political tool and support the principle of freedom of speech and association which is an integral part of our democracy."

"We are also concerned about some using violent incidents as political mudslinging tools, without consideration of the facts or the effect it can have in communities under stress. The Shobashobane incident where the province's Premier made unfounded remarks about a firearm used in the attack comes to mind. We call on the provincial government to act responsibly; to act in the interests of all the people of this province and not confuse their party political Provincial Working Committee with provincial government," Mr Ndlovu concluded.
