IFP RESPONDS TO YENGENI'S CORRUPTION CHARGES

Durban: October 4th, 2001

Mr V.B. Ndlovu MP, IFP Spokesperson for Safety and Security said the charges Mr Yengeni faced were very grave and tarnished the Executives commitment to transparency and clean governance and were indicative of a deeply entrenched culture of corruption and cronyism.

Mr Ndlovu added that it was imperative that the rule-of-law and the judicial process should take its course and noted that in criminal law, a person is only found guilty with proof "beyond all reasonable doubt". It was therefore essential that Mr Yengeni is not "tried by the media", and nor was this the time for political parties to engage in sniping or point scoring.

The arrest of such a high-profile politician undermines the reputation and credibility of Parliament to uphold the Constitution's provisions of transparent government and the very highest standards in public life.
