IFP Rejects Ginwala Commission

Inkatha Freedom Party Statement By:

PROFESSOR CHRISTIAN T MSIMANG
IFP DEPUTY-SECRETARY GENERAL

4 October 2007

As the suspicion surrounding the suspension of the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) Vusi Pikoli increases, the Inkatha Freedom Party's National Executive Committee would like to express our disappointment with the fact that former National Assembly speaker, Frene Ginwala, is leading the enquiry into Adv Pikoli.

As an ANC NEC member, we believe that Ginwala is not the appropriate person to lead such a significant inquest into whether or not Pikoli is fit to hold office. The IFP would have preferred an independent candidate such as a retired judge or professor.

The IFP views Pikoli's suspension in a very serious light and we believe that the current situation amounts to nothing more than political manipulation.

Furthermore, we believe that rumours that the NPA have secured a warrant of arrest for National Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi should be clarified as soon as possible.

As the head of the international police organisation, Interpol, and the head of the South African Police Service we need the Presidency to clarify this matter urgently so that dignity and respect can be restored to the office of the National Police Commissioner and the SAPS.
