The IFP welcomes the intervention of Acting MEC for Local Government Lydia Johnson in the cash-strapped uMgungundlovu District Municipality following the abrupt departure of the controversial Municipal Manager Monica Mngadi.
"It is the nature of the intervention, however, that has brought back the memories of the department's double standards in dealing with municipalities of different political colours," said Councillor Thokozo Bhengu who leads the IFP in the council.
The IFP contends that if uMgungundlovu District Municipality was IFP-controlled, the Acting MEC would have taken over its financial management long ago.
"In the case of an ANC-run council, the MEC had waited until the Municipal Manager left the council bankrupt only to give the municipality breathing space by appointing an Acting Municipal Manager," said Councillor Bhengu.
The IFP opposed Mngadi's appointment from the outset on the grounds of her fabricated qualifications and a general lack of experience. "It appears we have been vindicated: Ms Mngadi's mismanagement has brought the council to the verge of bankruptcy," said Coucillor Bhengu.
The IFP will follow closely all developments in the council. "As a matter of urgency, we call upon the Acting MEC for Local Government to investigate the whereabouts of the missing municipal funds," said Councillor Bhengu.
