ANC Silent while Homes Burn

March 5, 2007

While on a visit to Alexandra Township in Gauteng on the weekend the Deputy Chairperson of the IFP Youth Brigade, Ms Pat Lebenya-Ntanzi, was shocked to hear community reports of the burning of 10 informal houses. On visiting the scene she was informed that the ANC Ward Councillor was contacted but did not come to the scene and there was no response from the City of JHB Metropolitan Council when contacted.

Pat said:

"I am shocked to experience the trauma of the 25 families affected by this tragedy. But an even greater shock was to hear that the ANC Ward Councillor did not even bother to pitch up when this matter was reported . And when the community tried to contact the City of JHB for immediate aid and assistance for these families again there was no response."

"Because of the lack of service from Council the IFP contacted local emergency relief organisations who were quick to respond with help. The IFP offers it's thanks to them."

"The behaviour of the Council and the Councillor is simply not acceptable.  It's not good enough to go to the people in election years with promises of service but then fail them in their hour of need."
