IFP Approves KZN Premier, Remains Ambivalent About Speaker

6 May 2009

The IFP has congratulated Dr Zweli Mkhize on his election as KwaZulu Natal Premier.

"We respect the outcome of April 22 election that has seen the ANC getting an absolute majority of votes in KwaZulu Natal. As candidate of the ruling party, Dr Zweli Mkhize received the IFP votes in today's election in the KwaZulu Natal Legislature," said Leader of the Official Opposition in KwaZulu Natal Dr Bonginkosi Buthelezi.

The IFP has, however, expressed its reservations about the choice of former MEC for Health Peggy Nkonyeni for the position of Speaker of the KwaZulu Natal Legislature.

"In principle, we accept that the party which has an absolute majority can nominate its candidates unchallenged. Considering Mrs Nkonyeni's pending fraud trail, the ANC should perhaps have picked a candidate without such a blemish on their reputation," said Dr Buthelezi.
