ANC Cannot Ignore Call For a Commission of Inquiry

6th October 2008

The ANC-led eThekwini Municipality cannot afford to ignore the damning report which details corruption, party-patronage and repression of shack-dwellers associations within the eThekwini's housing system. This was said today by the Inkatha Freedom Party in reaction to the outcome of a study conducted by the Geneva-based Centre on Housing Rights and Evictions into the eThekwini Municipality's housing.

Speaking for the IFP, Joshua Mazibuko stated that the IFP fully supports the recommendation for an independent investigation into the eThekwini's housing system. "This report serves to strengthen what has always been our view that the housing policy of the ANC-led eThekwini Municipality leaves much to be desired and is not geared towards addressing the needs of the poorest," Mazibuko.

"A Commission of Inquiry into the whole housing system must be instituted urgently in order to find the truth about these serious allegations. The ANC owes the poorest of this city and the taxpayers to dig deep and unearth the whole story. They can only ignore it to their own detriment," he concluded.
