SASOL URGED TO IMPROVE THEIR SAFETY STANDARDS
June 7, 2006
Statement by:Mr. Eric Lucas, IFP
spokesperson for Minerals & Energy
The IFP's spokesperson for Minerals and Energy, Mr. Eric Lucas,
has condemned the recent blast that has injured 19 workers at
Sasol.
Mr. Lucas said:
"I have tried numerous times to bring attention to the safety
standards of Sasol, and urged them to improve or constantly
monitor their standards. If the last two accidents prove
anything - it is that Sasol and the Ministry needs to take a
closer look at the safety and operational standards."
Further Mr. Lucas added that the investigation should be
launched earlier than a week. He said: "Work has been suspended
and there should be no reason as to why the investigation can
not start sooner. We would like answers, so that corrective
measures can be taken expeditiously, and bring to book the
people that are responsible - if the finding is human error."
In conclusion Mr. Lucas said: "I would like to forward my best
wishes to those that was injured as well as to their families. I
hope that this time round, Sasol would have a better attitude to
compensating the injured, as it has taken almost two years for
the families of those that was killed or injured in the
September 2004 blast, to receive any form of compensation."
