Taxi Conductors Reduce Accident Rates
March 8, 2007
The IFP believes the time has come for the government to work
closely with the community and consider its needs when
formulating policy regarding taxi conductors whom it seems to be
bent on eradicating.
“The fate of taxi conductors proves that the government attempts
to regulate the South African taxi industry are short-sighted
and ultimately futile,” said the Chairperson of the Ethekwini
IFP Youth Brigade, Muzikayise Simelane.
The IFP sees taxi conductors as essential contributors to
transport safety. “We genuinely believe that taxi conductors do
reduce accident rates by sharing the duties of taxi drivers.
Their assistance in collecting money and navigating the driver
is indispensable,” said Simelane.
The IFP maintains that the government cannot be taken seriously
if it keeps on promising new jobs and, at the same time, works
hard to axe the existing positions in the taxi industry.
The IFP has long viewed the South African taxi industry as a
triumph of free enterprise in the face of adversity. “What this
industry needs from the government is support, constructive
assistance and encouragement, not a cold shower,” said Simelane.
