IFP Welcomes Overhaul of Western Cape Public Transport
MEDIA STATEMENT RELEASED BY:
MR KOOS VAN DER MERWE MP
IFP SPOKESPERSON ON TRANSPORT
May 8, 2007
Mr Koos van der Merwe, Inkatha Freedom Party spokesperson on Transport today welcomed the announcement of Cape Town City's public transport overhaul.
He
said:
"The IFP welcomes the announcement by the Western Cape MEC for Transport and Public Works, Marius Fransman, of the proactive decision to take ownership of the dismal public transport system in Cape Town. Increasing the number of trains, raising bus subsidies and regulating the taxi industry would not only mean a better and safer public transport system for 2010, but also it would alleviate the atrocious rush-hour traffic on our roads as more commuters would reconsider using private modes of transport."
Further, Mr van der Merwe said: "Although the IFP applauds the overhaul plan, we can not help but be concerned about the reaction of the existing taxi operators in Cape Town. The recapitalisation programme initiated by Government has not been met with a positive response and I am unable to see how this programme will be seen in any other light by the taxi operators.
The IFP hopes that full consultations with operators and authorities will take place before any drastic changes come into effect."
Mr van der Merwe concluded by saying:
"The IFP also questions the MEC about the roll-out plan. We would like further information regarding the implementation process of this programme, and hope that all role players' work together to put in effect this plan as soon as possible."
