Traffic Lights Before New Street Names

8th October 2008

Malfunctioning traffic lights are wreaking havoc at most major intersections in central Durban while the hotly contested new street names are up, causing even more confusion in the city.

"A brand new street name against a traffic light permanently flashing red is now a common sight in Durban. This aptly underscores the ANC-controlled eThekwini Council's priorities," said Councillor Thembi Nzuza who leads the IFP in that council.

Malfunctioning traffic lights are exposing drivers and pedestrians to unnecessary danger. "It is curious that no effort has been made on the part of the city police to ease the traffic flow in the absence of malfunctioning lights," said Cllr Nzuza.

On a related note, the IFP has long opposed the ANC's highly politicised move to rename Durban's public places at the expense of more pressing items on the council's socio-economic agenda.

"The new street names have incurred unnecessary cost to the ratepayer and created general confusion in the city. This goes to show that ANC in council has consistently put party politics before the interests of the ratepayer," said Cllr Nzuza.
