IFP SAYS BRUTAL POLICE MUST BE SUSPENDED WITHOUT PAY OR BENEFITS, PROSECUTED AND JAILED

Durban :  8 November, 2000

IFP Safety & Security Spokesperson, Velaphi Ndlovu MP has demanded that the brutal police who led the savage attack with dogs against defenceless people, which was shown on SABC's Special Assignment Programme, must be suspended without pay or benefits and prosecuted with the full force of the law.

Mr Ndlovu said:

"The brutality and savagery of the attack shown last night on SABC defies comprehension. It is almost impossible to believe that police personnel could inflict such an horrific attack on their fellow human beings."

"The IFP has always urged the community to work closely with the police in the common fight against crime. But it is clear that the community can only be expected to do so if such disgusting and disgraceful individuals are drummed out of the police force forthwith."

"It is clear that the legacy of apartheid racism and brutality still hangs heavily over the police service. The Commissioner must take urgent action to eradicate such behaviour from SAPS."

"As a first step the police officers concerned must be suspended immediately without pay or benefits and prosecuted with the full force of the law. It is to be hoped that the courts will impose maximum sentences on them for this callous display of wickedness."

"Furthermore, as this is not the first instance of its kind, a thorough investigation must be launched into police brutality, and all and any individuals involved must be stripped of their police badge and prosecuted. There is no place for this inhuman brutality anywhere in our new South Africa, least of all within the service which is charged with the protection of the public."
