IFP URGES MADUNA TO RECOMMEND APPOINTMENT OF HEATH TO ARMS PROBE

Durban :  9 January, 2001

Mr Velaphi Ndlovu MP, IFP member of Parliament's Joint Standing Committee on Defence, is urging Justice Minister Penuell Maduna to recommend to the State President that Judge Willem Heath be appointed to the probe into the Government's R43 billion arms deal.

Mr Ndlovu said:

"A number of serious allegations of corruption have been made with regard to this arms deal and it is vital that we ensure that the matter is investigated as fully as it possibly can."

"Politics and political pressure must be kept out of the investigation and the various agencies involved must be given full scope to get to the bottom of all allegations that have been made. Judge Heath's Unit can play an important role in this process."

"I urge Minister Maduna to make a clear recommendation to the President to include Judge Heath in the investigation. The Minister must ensure not only that justice is done but also that it is seen to be done."
