The IFP summoned the entire caucus of
the uMhlabuyalingana Municipality to an emergency meeting in
Durban yesterday to ascertain the veracity of reports alleging
that more than R3-million has gone unaccounted for.
Prof. Themba Msimang, chairman of the
party's Policy Oversight Committee (POC), said the IFP was
"highly agitated" by these reports of fraud, not simply because
of the implication of corruption but also because it
transgressed everything the party stands for.
"It is saddening that when our President
and Premier Elect have publicly prided themselves in the party's
record of clean, transparent and accountable government over the
years, something like this rears its head."
Prof. Msimang said until all the details
behind the allegations could be established, the IFP had in the
meantime insisted that the municipality agree to a forensic
audit of the entire matter.
"We will have to await the process that
entails the municipality's council calling for such a forensic
audit. I can assure you, though, our party will get to the
bottom of this and if heads have to roll, so be it, they will,"
Msimang concluded.
