MEDIA STATEMENT BY THE
INKATHA FREEDOM PARTY

ANC leadership should repudiate violence by Zuma supporters

IFP PRESS STATEMENT RELEASED BY:

MR VELAPHI B NDLOVU MP

IFP SPOKESPERSON ON SAFETY & SECURITY

9th September 2008

Mr Velaphi Ndlovu MP, IFP spokesperson on Safety & Security today said:

"The latest protest and demonstrations led by ANC and Zuma supporters in KwaZulu-Natal leads the IFP to believe that their actions are leading the country into a crisis.  Not the kind of 'revolutionary' crisis that Zuma supporters are always ranting about, but a socio-economic crisis."

"Yesterday's actions in KwaZulu-Natal have shown that Julius Malema's and Zwelithini Vavi's statements are indeed inciting violence amongst their followers, are indeed threatening and are indeed in need of retraction and condemnation from their leaders.  We ask:

-           How can the ANC allow this to carry on without condemnation?

-           Why will they not allow Zuma to clear his name?

-           What are they hoping to achieve with violence and threats?"

Mr Ndlovu further explained that these latest actions are taking the country back. "The call for teachers to strike and show their support for Zuma tomorrow is appalling.  The old rhetoric of 'Liberation before education' did the country no favours when you look at the current education crisis in South Africa.  How can educators deny their learners the opportunity to be educated and improve?  They are leaving these pupils with the message of hopelessness."

In conclusion Mr Ndlovu explained his position regarding the looming crisis these violent actions will have on the country. "The violence and threatening words expressed by leaders of the ANCYL, COSATU and SADTU leaves South Africans feeling very uneasy about the future of the leadership of this country.  How are international investors and donors meant to feel any different?  Should the confidence of investors fade, it will leave this country in the same economic difficulties as sanctions did in the past."

"The IFP calls for all citizens to allow justice to take its course, and to allow Zuma to clear his name in a court of law if he wants to be the President of this country."
