MEDIA STATEMENT ISSUED BY:

IFP SPOKESPERSON ON CORRECTIONAL SERVICES

November 9, 2006

The Inkatha Freedom Party's Spokesperson for Correctional Services, Ms Sybil Seaton MP, today said that the IFP welcomed the news of the resignation of South African Prisons Chief, Linda Mti.

"The IFP is pleased to hear that the Correctional Services' National Commissioner has decided to quit and we know that this resignation will bode well for the future of the Correctional Services Department," said Ms Seaton.

"South African prisons are overcrowded and mismanaged and therefore the IFP sincerely hopes that whoever is appointed to the post next, will have the relevant experience and knowledge to do the job well.

"In addition, we hope that the next Correctional Services National Commissioner will be able to root out the widespread corruption within the Department," concluded Ms Seaton.
