Success Of 2010 World Cup In Doubt

MEDIA STATEMENT ISSUED BY:
MR BONGINKOSI DHLAMINI MP
IFP SPOKESPERSON ON SPORT AND RECREATION

November 10, 2006

The Inkatha Freedom Party's Spokesperson for Sport & Recreation, Bonginkosi Dhlamini MP, expressed his concern today that the success of the 2010 World Cup might be in danger, following the news that Linda Mti, former Correctional Services Commissioner, is being considered for the position of Head of Security for the tournament.

"The looming 2010 Soccer World Cup will attract approximately 450 000 visitors to our shores, but we all know that the most important aspect in the lead-up to this showpiece, is the safety and security issue. If prospective international visitors deem our country not safe enough to travel to, there could be a very low attendance, possibly ruining the World Cup," commented Mr Dhlamini.

"The IFP finds the consideration of Mti for this position questionable, because during his stint as the Prison Chief, his leadership did not effectively address corruption or overcrowding within the Correctional Services Department. In addition to that, his department received qualified audit reports for the past five years. So, with all due respect, the IFP feels compelled to ask the local organising committee (LOC) of the 2010 Soccer World Cup - 'what part of Mr Mti's CV makes him so appealing for this position?'

In conclusion, Mr Dhlamini questioned Mr Mti's skills and experience.

"The IFP feels that Mr Mti's consideration for one of the World Cup's top posts is even more ridiculous if you consider the fact that to our knowledge, he hasn't got any police training or background. Plus, he is still to face the music regarding a drunk driving charge," concluded Mr Dhlamini.
