TRC Not an Answer to Zimbabwe's Problems

PRESS STATEMENT RELEASED BY:
MR BM SKOSANA MP
IFP SPOKESPERSON ON FOREIGN AFFAIRS

10th November 2008

Mr Ben Skosana MP IFP spokesperson on Foreign Affairs today said:

"The untimely call from the leader of the MDC, Morgan Tsvangirai for the establishment of the Truth & Reconciliation Commission in Zimbabwe should be discouraged by South Africa and the leadership of SADC; it is like waving a red rag in front of the ZANU-PF bull, which is terrified of potential prosecutions.  The call can only make President Mugabe dig in his heels further.  For this reason, an assured exit strategy should also be introduced in the process."

"Plausible rumour has it that some of the powerful men in the Zimbabwean military and police force are responsible for President Mugabe's recalcitrant position and insistence on retaining powerful Cabinet positions for their protection."

"It is now incumbent on President Mothlanthe and the entire leadership of SADC to make it unequivocally clear to ZANU-PF Generals and Police Captains that there will be no external investment and aid as long as MDC plays an inferior role to that of ZANU-PF, in which international investors have lost all confidence."
