CONCERN ABOUT GOVERNMENT ONE-SIDEDNESS IN ENACTING
BLACK ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT IN AGRICULTURE (AgriBEE)

Durban: 11 September 2004

The Inkatha Freedom Party supports the direction that government is taking by promoting the participation of black farmers in viable agriculturally based businesses.

We call on government that for any initiative to succeed it must be all-inclusive and participatory. Although government has set up the initiative it cannot be dictatorial, but needs to include all stakeholders in the process.

The AgriBEE framework document which could have been a product which unifies all stakeholders has now become contentious just because government did not consider that people might have a different view of how they perceive to want to conduct their business and futures.

It must not be construed that there is resistance to the concept programme by stakeholders, but there is differences on how the objective is to be reached.

We call on government not to act as a steamroller, but to consult more with stakeholders and ensure that the process is participatory before trying to push the process forward.
