IFP PROPOSES SPECIAL COMMITTEE TO HAVE OVERSIGHT OVER SCORPIONS

CAPE TOWN : NOVEMBER 16, 1999

In a speech to the National Assembly today, IFP Parliamentary Safety & Security Spokesperson, Mr Velaphi Ndlovu MP will propose the establishment of a Special Parliamentary Committee - selected on a cross-party basis from members of the Justice and Safety & Security Portfolio Committees - to provide oversight of the Scorpions.

Commenting on the proposal, Mr Ndlovu said:

"We must ensure that the Scorpions can never be misused, turned upon the law-abiding citizen or manipulated for shadowy political purposes....we must be on our guard at all times against the misuse of organs of the state for party political purposes.

"That is why it is vital to have effective Parliamentary oversight of the Scorpions."
