Statement by Prince MG Buthelezi MP:
Supreme Court Ruling - Mr Jacob Zuma

12th January 2009

I have noted The Supreme Court of Appeal today upheld an appeal by the National Director of Public Prosecutions which had halted the proceedings against Mr Jacob Zuma.

I expressed my regret when Mr Zuma was released from office in 2005, and again last year after the Nicholson Judgment, that Mr Zuma has been denied his day in Court. It is now vital that this happens as swiftly as possible. It is regrettable that the Nicholson decision which has been judged unwarranted led to irreversible political consequences for both our country and former President.

Unless this matter is now dealt with swiftly and the rule-of-law is allowed to take its course, our country will be subject to a seemingly perpetual political crisis. There cannot be a political solution to a judicial question.

Unless Mr Zuma has an opportunity to clear his name in Court, this matter will hang over him like the Sword of Damocles reinforcing the impression that he is politically damaged goods.

Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi MP, Durban.
