IFP SAYS SELLING SCHOOL REPORTS IS IMMORAL

CAPE TOWN : WEDNESDAY 12 APRIL, 2000

The Inkatha Freedom Party has lashed out at teachers who sell school reports to students, as immoral. Reacting to the news that some teachers in Gauteng are reported to be selling school reports to students, the IFP Spokesperson on Education, Mr Alfred Mpontshane said:

"Selling school reports to pupils is like signing a cheque which bounces. The effects of a bounced cheque can be devastating. Likewise, giving a pupil a report which fraudulently puts them on a higher level than they are fit for, can be as devastating, both in short and long terms. It could permanently dash their hopes."

"The IFP has always maintained that the system of education can never be better than its teachers. If the teachers are corrupt, the system will be corrupted."

"To sell a school report is to vulgarise the primary objective of education, which is the enrichment of the human personality. It is an immoral act and a breach of the trust that has been placed in the teacher by parents, pupils and society as a whole. Such teachers must be flushed out of the education system"
