IFP DEMANDS ACTION AGAINST INDUSTRIAL POLLUTION OF AIR AND WATER

CAPE TOWN :  12 MAY, 2000

Dr Kirsten Rajoo MP has urged the Minister of Environment and Tourism to look again at legislation governing air and water pollution by large scale industry. In a motion tabled in the National Assembly, Dr Rajoo raised concerns about pollution caused by large multi-national industry south of Durban and called on the Minister to set up a stringent watchdog body to monitor pollution in the area.

Dr Rajoo said:

"It is unacceptable that industry is allowed to get away with monitoring itself on pollution. We have recent evidence of significant under reporting of pollution by industry and it is now clear that we need a stringent watchdog to deal with this problem."

"The release of noxious fumes into the air affects breathing and leads to long-term respiratory problems for local communities. It is vital that action is taken now to end this practice and to provide a better quality of life for all our people."
