'BLAMING PAGAD FOR CAPE BOMBS IS FUTILE WITHOUT ARRESTS & CONVICTIONS'

DURBAN :  12 August, 2000

The IFP roundly condemns the perpetrators of the latest bomb outrage in the Western Cape and calls upon the Department of Safety & Security to step up its operations to secure arrests and convictions and to bring an end to this terror campaign. IFP Safety and Security Spokesperson, Mr Velaphi Ndlovu MP, said:

"On every occasion that a bomb explodes in the Cape, Minister Tshwete claims it is the work of PAGAD. If he is correct, then the public has the right to ask why the Scorpions have not thoroughly infiltrated informers into PAGAD by now and rendered it ineffective. At great expense, we have established the Scorpions, yet with regard to PAGAD they are unable to sting anyone."

"Instead of the decisive action that the public demands, the Minister simply repeats his speculation that PAGAD is responsible, every time another bomb explodes. Such speculation offers no end to the bombing and no comfort to the victims. If there is evidence of the involvement of PAGAD in this attack, then the police should be making arrests and the courts securing convictions. Without such convictions, the Minister's apportioning of blame to PAGAD is futile."

"The people of Cape Town have had to suffer this campaign of terror for far too long. It is time for the Department of Safety and Security to substitute words for decisive action to bring a halt to these bombing outrages."
