STATEMENT BY:
MR ALFRED MPONTSHANE MP
IFP EDUCATION SPOKESPERSON
13 March 2008
The Inkatha
Freedom Party has for a very long time warned that the education
system in South Africa is in a state of revolving crisis, and
the report released yesterday by the Human Rights Commission
confirms our statements.
It is
absolutely shocking to read that our schoolchildren, as young as
seven years old, are pretending to hit or rape each other at
school. What is even more disturbing is that some young girls
are offering sex to educators in return for good marks.
These
actions must be denounced in the strongest possible manner.
The IFP
believes that the Human Rights Commission report only confirms
the following: our education department is in a sorry state and
that we are facing a disaster, which government has failed to
recognise and properly address.
The IFP
believes that school violence is a reflection of a sick society.
And therefore we need to urgently restore the values of ubuntu,
which has gradually eroded over the years.
Furthermore
the IFP also believes that respect for authority and a respect
for the profession must be reintroduced. We must revisit laws
that allow for or encourage anti-social behaviour. Discipline,
of both learners and educators, must be returned to schools.
How can we
honestly expect to bring down the high levels of crime in our
country when our educational institutions have become havens of
drug abuse, violence, ill-discipline and immoral behaviour? Our
school grounds have become war zones and not places of safety
and learning.
The IFP
calls on government to:
- recognise
the crisis unfolding within our education system and to give it
the priority and attention it deserves
-
immediately announce what plans they are going to put in place
to stop the scourge of violence at our schools
