ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT ON IFP ETHEKWINI LEADER

Durban: April 13, 2004

Between 19:00 and 19:30 this evening there was an assassination attempt on IFP Ethekwini leader, Mr Divas Mncwanbe, according to IFP National Spokesperson Musa Zondi.

As Mr Mncwanbe was approaching the Magabheni Township near Port Shepstone his car was attacked in a volley of gunshots. Musa Zondi said that preliminary findings suggest that the bullets were fired from an AK47.

Musa Zondi added that Mr Mncwabe suggested that the ANC might be responsible for the attack because this morning ANC activists had driven around Port Shepstone shouting out "Mayihlome!" (Let us take up arms!). Mr Mncwanbe thought the activists were speaking figuratively about the election, but now believes that it may well have been a reference to the assassination attempt on his life.

Musa Zondi said that the IFP condemns this dastardly assassination attempt and called for the police to redouble their efforts to pursue the perpetrators in the interests of a free and fair election.
