The IFP urges the South African
government, the public servants and the trade unions, whose
representatives are now backing the public sector strikers, to
finalise the negotiations regarding salary increases to mutual
satisfaction.
“South Africa cannot wait a moment longer for a peaceful
settlement between the government and its employees given the
damage the strike has done the country’s economy,” said IFP
provincial spokesperson Blessed Gwala.
The IFP fears the current standoff between the government and
the strikers is benefiting no one and hurting everyone. “Social
cohesion comes at a price, but let that price not be too high.
The time has come to settle the dispute,” said Gwala.
The IFP also fears that the acrimonious dispute behind the
strike may dent the international image of South Africa as
organiser of the 2010 Soccer World Cup if the strike continues.
“Last thing we want to create is an impression of an unstable
country with deep social divisions that can erupt into a violent
strike at any moment,” said Gwala.
