IFP SAYS LAW-ENFORCERS MUST BE EXEMPLARY
DURBAN : 13 JULY, 2000
The Inkatha Freedom Party has challenged all law-enforcement agencies to be
exemplary in their behaviour. In a statement issued today, in reaction to the reports that
the Minister of Justice, Dr Penuell Maduna has taken disciplinary actions against six
magistrates for drunken driving and other improper behaviour, the IFP Spokesperson on
Justice, Mr Velaphi Ndlovu said:
"It becomes more shameful when those who are in leadership positions,
especially the law enforcement agencies, fail to behave responsibly. The
magistrates' duties are to ensure that all citizens respect the law. It stands to
reason therefore that they must be the first to show by example that the law must
indeed be respected. This also applies to other law-enforcement agencies, as well
as other leaders."
"The IFP fully applauds the Minister of Justice for not hesitating to take the
necessary steps to show that our law is not a respecter of status. The Minister's
action will contribute to the transformation that is needed in the civil service.
Employees of the Department of Justice in particular must realise the responsibilities that the country has placed on their shoulders. We expect them
to discharge that responsibility by deed."
