IFP Calls For Special Investigation Into Yengeni's Parole

MEDIA STATEMENT ISSUED BY:
MS SYBIL SEATON MP
IFP SPOKESPERSON ON CORRECTIONAL SERVICES

November 13, 2006

The Inkatha Freedom Party today called for a special investigation into former ANC chief whip and convicted fraudster Tony Yengeni's weekend parole and his breach of parole conditions, said Ms Sybil Seaton MP.

"We are calling on the Minster of Correctional Services, Ngconde Balfour, to launch an immediate investigation into the special weekend parole granted to Mr Yengeni and his total disregard for the South African Correctional Services Department by breaking parole conditions.

"We need answers on what sort of punishment will be handed down on him in relation to his late arrival at Malmesbury prison as well as him being pictured drinking alcohol, which is not allowed as stipulated by his parole conditions.

"Furthermore, the IFP would like for Mr Balfour to tell South Africa why two ANC comrades, Mr Tony Yengeni and Mr Schabir Shaik, are receiving special treatment in prison? They are criminals and should be treated as such."

In conclusion Ms Seaton said: "The IFP would like assurance from the Minister that there will be no further preferential treatment and Mr Balfour needs to clarify whether or not Yengeni will from now on be having every weekend off?"
