Solve Cash-In Transit Dispute Now

MEDIA STATEMENT ISSUED BY:
MR VELAPHI NDLOVU MP
IFP SPOKESPERSON FOR SAFETY AND SECURITY

December 13, 2006

The Inkatha Freedom Party's Spokesperson for Safety and Security, Mr Velaphi Ndlovu MP, today expressed his concern that the pending cash-in-transit strike could have serious consequences over the holiday season.

"We note with concern that the imminent cash-in-transit strike might go ahead any day now. The IFP would like to call on cash guards to reopen negotiations with the Safety and Security Minister and Labour Minister as well as other interested parties," said Mr Ndlovu

"We are worried that if this strike is to go ahead, security companies might be forced to make use of guards that are not properly trained, placing them in further danger. But we also feel that it is important for the management of these security companies to play a bigger role in finding a workable solution, because it is their employees, who for a very basic salary, go out everyday to work in the most dangerous situations imaginable.

"Furthermore, the IFP is extremely concerned by calls made by the cash-in-transit union for all security guards to join the strike in solidarity. South Africa can ill afford another situation where striking guards destroy property and cause havoc."

In conclusion Mr Ndlovu said: "Although the IFP understands the reasoning behind the strike, we want to plead for the reopening of negotiations. We therefore urge all parties involved in this dispute to find a solution sooner than later."
