NPA Must Set the Record Straight

Inkatha Freedom Party Statement By:
MR VELAPHI NDLOVU MP
IFP SPOKESPERSON ON SAFETY AND SECURITY

13 December 2007

The IFP calls on the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to stop keeping the public in the dark on whether or not they are planning to arrest National Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi.

The fact of the matter is that the Scorpions did obtain a warrant of arrest against Commissioner Selebi over his alleged involvement in the criminal underworld.

But after intervention from President Thabo Mbeki and the suspension of NPA head Vusi Pikoli, the matter went back for review.

The Acting NPA boss Mokotedi Mpshe has already completed his review of the Scorpions' case. The South African public should be made aware of his findings immediately.

Furthermore, the IFP feels that the time has come for Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi to be suspended until the cloud that is hanging over his head is removed.

The South African Police Service can not execute their duties fully when South Africa's top cop is an alleged criminal. It affects the integrity of the entire police force.

As the Head of Interpol this issue doesn't just affect South Africa, it also has international repercussions. We call on the NPA to make their findings public as soon as possible. For the sake of the 2010 World Cup and our international image we need clarity on this issue right now.
