IFP PAYS TRIBUTE TO ARCHBISHOP DENNIS HURLEY

Durban: 14 February 2004

The IFP today paid tribute to the late Archbishop Dennis Hurley for his "long and distinguished Christian service and his courageous fight against apartheid and discrimination in all its forms".

Reverend Musa Zondi, the IFP National Spokesperson, said that Archbishop Dennis Hurley, who was the longest serving Roman Catholic Bishop in the world, was a friend of the President of the IFP, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi.

Reverend Zondi added that though Archbishop Hurley and the IFP later differed about the means to defeat apartheid, the bond of friendship in Christ was never broken

Reverend Zondi said:

"Archbishop Dennis Hurley will be sorely missed by the Roman Catholic and wider Christian community. Yet we know that Archbishop Hurley fought the good fight of faith and as his now lives with Christ, his legacy of service to be 'salt and light' remains with us forever."

"The IFP extends our deepest condolences to the Cardinal Wilfried Napier, the Roman Catholic community, and the friends and family of Archbishop Hurely."
