Dr Lionel Mtshali's Weekly Newsletter to the People of KwaZulu-Natal

February 14, 2007

My dear friends and fellow South Africans,

KwaZulu-Natal - our home - is beset with many problems. Unemployment remains high. Violent crime lingers on. Our women and youth are alienated from our developmental efforts. The body politic has been poisoned by greed and corruption. This Parliament has been degenerated. Accountability to the people is lacking. Mismanagement of the state resources continues.

Our provincial government is more interested in organising Formula 1 races than providing our school children with textbooks. They are building a new Parliament, which we do not need, while they are failing to build more hospitals which we do need. In my experience of government, I have found that it is the sum of small things that makes a difference to the people on the ground.

The IFP, as the Official Opposition in KwaZulu-Natal, is here to see to the small things that bring value to successful families and communities. From now on, we will communicate with you - the people of this province - through this weekly newsletter. We will relate to your needs and aspirations wherever the provincial government neglects or ignores them.

In dealing with our province’s business, transparency and accountability will be the IFP’s watchwords. Issues of governance and management of resources for your benefit will be foremost on our minds. The IFP will ensure that the skills and talents of all our people are harnessed in our drive for development. We are here to promote family and community values that are necessary for order and social stability in our society.
As this Parliament opens for the 2007 session, I want you to know that there is someone watching over our government’s shoulder and safeguarding your interest in the governance of this province. I want you to know that the IFP is out there for you. I salute you.
