Sex-pest appointment sends wrong message
MEDIA STATEMENT RELEASED BY:
MS CONNIE ZIKALALA MP
IFP SPOKESPERSON FOR GENDER ISSUES
March 14, 2007
Ms Connie Zikalala, IFP spokesperson on Gender Issues, today
expressed absolute dismay at the announcement of Norman
Mashabane being appointed as a member of the Limpopo provincial
legislature.
She said:
"The appointment of Norman Mashabane to the Limpopo provincial
legislature flies in the face of everything that is decent. The
ANC is sending out the message that even though you are
convicted of sexual harassment, you will still be rewarded with
a high profile appointment as a public servant."
"This appointment is a slap in the face of women everywhere that
fight for gender equality. Recently the 16 Days of Activism
against Violence to Women and Children has been changed to a 365
day campaign, but the ANC is sending out a mixed message with
this appointment."
Ms Zikalala concluded by saying: "21 counts of sexual harassment
cannot be ignored, and we urge the ANC to rethink this
appointment as we wonder: 'What's next?". The reinstatement of
Mr Goniwe, or a high profile appointment for Mr Yengeni?"
