Durban buses have come to a halt
courtesy of the ANC-led eThekwini Municipality's preoccupation
with self-enrichment and jobs for pals, the IFP has claimed.
"What a way to showcase service delivery
at local level at election time to the hundreds of thousands of
passengers whose livelihoods depend on Remant Alton's buses in
and around Durban," said IFP leader in the eThekwini Council,
Cllr Thembi Nzuza in reaction to the transport company's
announcement that it has suspended all its operations until
April 14.
The IFP has pointed out that the
eThekwini Municipality's decision to terminate the Remant Alton
bus company's contract will affect not only Durban commuters but
also hundreds of bus drivers and technicians. "This is what the
ANC means by service delivery and job creation," said Cllr Nzuza.
The IFP has long criticised the lack of
transparency behind the transactions that have made Remant Alton
buses change hands over time, inconveniencing Durban commuters,
threatening transport jobs but filling the pockets of
ANC-affiliated beneficiaries of municipal tenders.
"The ANC's preoccupation with
self-enrichment and jobs for pals has resulted in a situation
where the eThekwini Municipality, home to more than three
million people, has no official bus service," said Cllr Nzuza.
