"IFP agrees with investigation"

Durban: 14 October 2003

The IFP provincial leader in Mpumalanga, Mr Maxwell Sibiya (MP) would like to applaud the MEC of Local Government, Mohammed Bhabha, for appointing independent forensic auditors to probe the Gert Sibande district municipality for corruption and maladministration.

"The IFP strongly opposes corruption and maladministration," said Sibiya.

"The mayor should be suspended to allow the investigation to go ahead without any interference. The investigation must also be transparent so that taxpayers are aware of the progress of the investigation."

The executive mayor, Busi Mdluli, stands accused of spending more than R100 000 of taxpayers' money on car rentals and cellphone costs. According to documents from the municipality Mdluli spent R125 000 between May last year and March this year renting top-of-the-range Mercedes-Benz cars while her official vehicle was in for repairs.

"We cannot tolerate the abuse of taxpayers' money," said Sibiya.
