IFP Calls For Urgent Parliamentary Debate On Zimbabwe

MEDIA STATEMENT RELEASED BY:
MR KOOS VAN DER MERWE MP
IFP CHIEF WHIP

March 15, 2007

The Inkatha Freedom Party Parliamentary Caucus today urgently called on the Speaker of the National Assembly to allow a debate on Zimbabwe, as a matter of public importance in terms of rule 103, said the IFP's Chief Whip, Mr Koos van der Merwe MP, today.

"We have requested an urgent debate on the deteriorating situation in Zimbabwe and its political, economic and social consequences for Zimbabwe, South Africa and the South African region," said Mr van der Merwe.

"As a result of the disturbing events over many years in Zimbabwe, and in particular in the last few days, the Secretary General of the United Nations, the European Union, the US and numerous other governments have expressed their deep concern at the undemocratic actions of the Mugabe regime and the gross violations of human rights against the opposition supporters and leaders.

"We therefore call on the Speaker to allow an urgent debate in the House on this matter before the Easter recess," concluded Mr van der Merwe
