Miss IFP Beauty Pageant Under Way

15 May 2007

The IFP is proud to present its own beauty pageant as the event, which kicked off in May, unfolds across 57 constituency areas of KwaZulu Natal.

"The constituencies have until September to choose the top 10 contestants who will further contest the district-level. The response, both from the public and sponsors, has so far been overwhelming," said the event organiser Sipho Mbatha MPP who represents the party in the KwaZulu Natal Provincial Parliament.

The top 5 beauties to emerge from the 11 district level pageants in November will contest the finals a month later in Durban. The IFP hopes that the pageant, open to young women between the ages of 16 and 25, will become an annual event. "There are some amazing prizes to be won," said Mbatha.

The pageant is a joint initiative of the IFP provincial executive and the IFP Youth Brigade. "By interacting with the youth on fun level, we are hoping to improve their participation in the electoral process. Given the widespread lack of interest in politics and voter apathy amongst the province's youth and first-time voters, this is a challenge," said Mbatha.
